Your Shopify Shipping Rates Can Disappear Without an Error

A customer fills a cart, reaches the shipping step, and there is nothing there. No rates, no options, no way forward. In the admin everything looks correct. The shipping app is installed, the zones exist, no error has been logged, and no order has failed, because no order was ever created.

This failure mode became much more likely in 2026, and the cause is a change most merchants have never heard of. It is worth ten minutes of your time even if your checkout is working today, because the change only bites when an app updates, which is not a day you choose.

What changed

On 26 June 2026 Shopify published a developer changelog entry flagged as a breaking API change. Starting with Admin API version 2026-10, creating a carrier service no longer automatically adds that carrier service to eligible shipping zones in the General shipping profile. In Shopify's own words, creating one only registers the carrier service.

Before this, installing a live rates app effectively wired itself up. The app created its carrier service, Shopify attached it to your zones, and rates appeared at checkout. After it, registration and attachment are two separate steps, and the second one is now somebody's job rather than automatic. Shopify's recommendation is that merchants add the carrier calculated rate manually in the admin, with the alternative being that the developer attaches it through the shipping profile APIs.

Older API versions keep the old behaviour until they sunset. That is why this does not announce itself on a fixed date. It arrives whenever one of your apps moves to 2026-10 or later, or whenever you uninstall and reinstall one, which is exactly when you are least likely to be watching the shipping step of your own checkout.

Why there is no error

It helps to know how the pieces actually fit together, because the structure explains the silence.

A carrier service is the channel through which an app supplies prices at checkout. Rates themselves live in shipping profiles. Each profile contains zones, and a zone only asks an app for a price if it holds a rate set to use a carrier or app to calculate rates. Remove that rate line and the zone simply has nothing to offer. From Shopify's point of view nothing is broken, because a zone with no rates is a legitimate configuration that means you do not ship there.

So the system behaves exactly as designed and the merchant gets no signal. The only place the problem is visible is the one place merchants rarely look at as a customer: the shipping step, on a real address, in a real session.

How to check it

Open every zone in the relevant profile. For each zone you actually sell to, confirm there is a rate set to use a carrier or app to calculate rates, and that your app's carrier is the one selected in it. If the rate line is missing, add it from the dropdown.

Check which profile holds your products. This is the trap that catches people who have already checked their settings once. Products assigned to a custom shipping profile ignore the General profile entirely. A correct rate in General does nothing for a cart full of products that live somewhere else, so verify the profile the products are actually in.

After any reinstall, delete and re-add the rate line. A rate can keep pointing at a carrier service that no longer exists, which looks identical to a working configuration in the admin and quotes nothing at checkout. Remove the stale line and select the carrier again from the dropdown rather than trusting what is already there.

Test checkout per zone, not once. Reaching the shipping step with one address proves one zone. Test an address in each zone you sell to, and test separately with a product from each custom profile. This is tedious and it is the only test that actually proves anything.

Confirm your plan supports third party calculated rates. Carrier calculated shipping is not available on every Shopify plan, and a plan change can remove it. If it was switched off, no amount of configuration in the zones will bring the rates back.

What to ask the app vendor

If the rates are still missing after all of that, the question moves to the app, and three specific questions get you further than a general support ticket.

Ask which Admin API version the app currently uses, because that tells you whether the change applies to you at all. Ask whether the app attaches its rates to shipping profiles itself or expects the merchant to do it, because Shopify explicitly allows either and the vendor has made a choice. And ask for the request logs for a failing checkout, which will show whether Shopify called the app and got nothing back, or never called it in the first place. Those two cases have completely different fixes and no amount of guessing distinguishes them.

An honest caveat

The checks above are drawn from Shopify's own documentation of the change and from merchant reports of the symptom. The merchant discussion we traced records no confirmed resolution, which means these are sound diagnostic steps rather than a guaranteed fix. If you work through all of them and checkout is still empty, you have at least narrowed it to something the vendor or Shopify support has to answer, and you can hand them the evidence rather than the symptom.

One broader point. This is the second Shopify change in 2026 whose failure mode is silence rather than an error, the other being the end of Shopify Scripts execution. Both break a working store without telling anyone. The practical lesson is that for a store doing real volume, somebody has to complete a real checkout on a schedule, because the platform will not always tell you when it has stopped selling.

If you want that watched properly rather than discovered by a customer, that is part of what our Shopify development work covers.

Questions people are asking

Why does my Shopify checkout say there are no shipping rates available?

The most common cause is that the shipping zone your customer falls into has no rate attached that tells Shopify to ask your app for a price. If you use a live rates or carrier calculated app, installing it is no longer enough on its own. From Admin API version 2026-10 Shopify registers the carrier service but does not add it to your shipping profile, so the zone has nothing to quote from and checkout offers nothing.

What changed in Shopify API version 2026-10?

Shopify published a breaking API change on 26 June 2026. Starting with Admin API version 2026-10, creating a carrier service no longer automatically adds it to eligible shipping zones in the General shipping profile. Creating one only registers the carrier service. Shopify's recommended fix is for merchants to add the carrier calculated rate manually in the admin, or for the app developer to attach it using the shipping profile APIs.

Will I get an error or a warning if this happens?

No, and that is the dangerous part. There is no failed order, no error banner and nothing in the admin to review. The store works. The app shows as installed. Only the shipping step of checkout is empty, and you will usually learn about it from a drop in conversion or a customer message rather than from Shopify.

I checked my shipping settings and the rate is there. Why is it still broken?

Check which profile you looked at. Products assigned to a custom shipping profile ignore the General profile completely, so a rate sitting in General does nothing for them. The rate has to exist on the profile that actually holds the products in the cart, and on each zone within it that you sell to.

Does this affect older apps that have been working for years?

Not immediately. Older API versions keep the previous behaviour until they reach sunset, so an app that has not updated is unaffected for now. The breakage shows up when an app moves to 2026-10 or later, which is also why it tends to appear after an app update or a reinstall rather than on the day the change was published.

Could this be something else entirely?

Yes, and it is worth ruling the simple things out first. Confirm your plan supports third party calculated rates, confirm the customer's country is inside a zone you have defined at all, and confirm the products have weights if your rates depend on weight. An empty shipping step has several possible causes and this is only the newest one.
