On 1 October 2026, Shopify introduced Canvas, a visual workspace where merchants can view store pages together, edit elements, direct changes through Sidekick and preview the store across screen sizes. It is relevant to Shopify merchants and the agencies that build for them. The announcement does not establish availability in every account, so the time it saves still needs measuring.

If part of building a store gets faster, we should understand exactly which part.

What did Shopify announce with Canvas?

According to Shopify’s Canvas announcement, Canvas brings store pages into one visual workspace, with edits possible directly or through Sidekick, Shopify’s AI assistant, and previews across screen sizes. The announcement does not establish compatibility with every theme, app or store setup.

What could Shopify Canvas change in a store-development project?

From an agency perspective, Canvas could affect how some design and revision work gets done, and eventually how that work is estimated and priced.

Being able to make a visual change quickly is useful. The next question is whether it produces the right result throughout the store. Does the mobile layout remain comfortable? Does the Arabic version work properly? Are product options clear? Do the integrations still behave as expected?

A store is a collection of connected decisions. Changing one element can create work elsewhere. That is why I would measure the time required to reach a checked, usable result, not simply the time required to generate a page.

How should agencies price work when tools like Canvas speed it up?

My view is straightforward: if a tool reliably reduces production time, delivery estimates should reflect that.

At the same time, the scope of a project needs to be clear. Product organization, integrations, localization, testing and commercial decisions still require attention. Their value should be explained through the work involved and the problems they solve.

The sensible next step is to test Canvas on a development store. Give it a defined task, record the time spent and inspect the result across the relevant devices and languages. Then decide where it belongs in the workflow.

Tools will keep changing how stores are built. An agency’s responsibility is to understand those changes, price the work honestly and deliver something the business can operate with confidence.
