Shopify vs WooCommerce for MENA Brands

Published January 8, 2026 · 10 min read · Last updated: July 25, 2026

The Shopify vs WooCommerce question is answered too easily on both sides. The Shopify camp says "it just works." The WordPress camp says "you don't own your store on Shopify." Both are half-true. For MENA founder-led brands, the honest answer depends on team, roadmap and category — here's the working framework we use in advisory calls.

The core trade-off, honestly

Shopify is a hosted platform: PCI compliance, hosting, security patching, and uptime are Shopify's problem. You rent the platform and its app ecosystem. WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin: you self-host, you own everything, and you own the maintenance that comes with everything. The trade-off is control and cost floor (WooCommerce) versus speed, stability and app ecosystem depth (Shopify).

Payments

MENA is where this trade-off gets sharpest. Shopify has native integrations with most GCC payment providers (Checkout.com, Network International, Amazon Payment Services, Tabby, Tamara, Mada apps, Apple Pay). Setup is usually a few days per provider.

WooCommerce can integrate with all the same providers via plugins, but plugin quality varies wildly, and checkout customisation lands on your dev team. If you don't have in-house dev capacity, this is where WooCommerce silently costs you months.

Arabic and RTL

Shopify handles Arabic and RTL well when paired with a real Arabic-first theme (or a custom build). Most premium themes have RTL as a first-class variant. WooCommerce depends entirely on the theme you pick and the plugins you stack; RTL support ranges from excellent to broken. See the full picture in the Arabic-first Shopify guide.

Apps and integrations

Shopify's app store is deeper for e-commerce specifically — subscription tools, reviews, upsell, WhatsApp BSPs, analytics, ZATCA e-invoicing for KSA — and the quality bar is higher because Shopify vets more aggressively.

WooCommerce has a bigger raw plugin catalogue (via WordPress) but the quality distribution is much wider. Vetting plugin quality, security and long-term maintenance is your team's problem, not the platform's.

Speed to launch

Shopify launch timelines are typically 6–12 weeks for a real editorial build. Migrations from other platforms can be faster. WooCommerce launch timelines vary wildly by team; expect 8–20 weeks for a production-grade store with a dev team you trust.

Total cost of ownership over 24 months

The naïve comparison is Shopify subscription vs WooCommerce free. That's wrong. Model the real numbers:

  • Platform: Shopify $79–$399/month; WooCommerce $0 core.
  • Hosting: Shopify included; WooCommerce $50–$500/month depending on traffic.
  • Apps/plugins: Shopify typically $150–$500/month; WooCommerce $50–$300/month.
  • Dev maintenance: Shopify minimal; WooCommerce ongoing (security patches, plugin updates, PHP upgrades).
  • PCI, uptime, backup: Shopify included; WooCommerce is your responsibility.

For most MENA founder-led teams under $2m/year revenue, the Shopify total is lower after you count real maintenance costs. For teams with a dedicated dev team and deep custom needs, WooCommerce may be cheaper at scale — but rarely faster or safer.

Where WooCommerce genuinely wins

  • Content-heavy commerce built on top of an existing WordPress presence.
  • Custom logic that Shopify can't cleanly express even with Shopify Functions.
  • Teams that want full control over hosting, data residency, and every layer of the stack.
  • Some B2B and configure-price-quote scenarios.

Where Shopify genuinely wins

  • Founder-led DTC brands optimising for speed, stability and app ecosystem.
  • Multi-market expansion in the GCC or into Europe — Shopify Markets is a real advantage.
  • Teams without in-house dev who want a partner + platform combo.
  • Any brand that needs Shopify Plus features (checkout extensibility, Functions, Flow).

How we advise it

Our default recommendation for MENA founder-led DTC is Shopify — and for KSA-primary catalogues, we'll also compare against Salla honestly on a case-by-case basis. WooCommerce lives on the shortlist for specific teams with specific needs. Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify always the right answer?

No. For most MENA founder-led DTC brands it is — speed, stability, and the app ecosystem win. But WooCommerce fits teams with in-house dev, deep custom needs, or existing WordPress content operations.

What about Salla and Zid?

Meaningful contenders in KSA specifically. Locally native, fast to launch, integrated with local payments. Weaker for international expansion and app depth. See the full Salla vs Shopify vs Zid post.

Can WooCommerce handle GCC-scale traffic?

Yes, with the right hosting stack. But you own uptime, security, backups and PCI. That's a real operational cost most founder-led teams under-price.

Is the total cost of ownership really different?

Yes. Shopify's ceiling is higher on app fees; WooCommerce's floor is lower but its operational and maintenance costs are usually higher. Model both over 24 months, not just launch.
